This column is not directly about our sport of Track & Field but it reminds me of the importance of safety for all of our young student-athletes. Having studied sports science at UO back during the 70s and being a coach for 10 years, I certainly recognize from it the importance of providing safe facilities for pole vaulters, high jumpers, cages/fences for the discus, etc. Whether provided by athletic budgets, booster clubs, whatever, all of us (coaches, AD's, parents, athletes, etc) should be constantly thinking about proper equipment and safety.

Coaches and ADs in Mecklenburg County and surrounding counties may be interested in the Track Scheduling Meeting (both indoor & outdoor), tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 1 in room 215 at Providence HS (same place as CC meeting and last years track meeting). If you can send meet info ahead of time to Kurt Niedenzu (BillemanNC@aol.com ) we can save some time. (Also, send names of schools that are already coming to your meet)

Also, West 4-A Regional teams are reminded about the "B race" [i.e., J.V.] on Tuesday at McAlpine at 4:30 - if only a small number of runners are there we will run boys and girls together, otherwise we will split them up and run them separately with the girls running at 5 or 4:45 - no team scores, runners will receive place card when they finish and they will look up their time on the posted times on the new result board when all runners in the race have finished - this is not a required race at all, just one last chance to run a good time in good weather.

From Coach Rich Hargitt, East Gaston HS:

Last year we held a throwers only meet (shotput and discus). These results can be used towards qualifying for regionals as far as I understand. Last year we had three schools come. I would like to do it again this year at East Gaston if anyone is interested. We are looking at a Saturday possibily in April to do it. Please respond if you are interested and what dates might work for you (boys and girls). Also, please feel free to forward this to anyone that might want to get their throwers some extra attention and have them contact me through e-mail or at 704-941-4893. Thanks.

Coaches should be aware that it appears that marks achieved at Saturday's (1/22) meet in Clemson's indoor facility will not count toward qualifying for the NCHSAA's 2011 State "Indoor" Championships.

The meet organizers have apparently not obtained the required sanctions from the NCHSAA or the NFHS, so this will be an unsanctioned meet.

NCPrepTrack has learned this from a rather disappointed parent who communicated earlier today with the NCHSAA's Que Tucker and discovered this, and wanted to share it with us in the track community.

Those of use who have been around the sport of cross country since the 1960s have watched the progress of meet result technology, from hand-written carbon-paper, to folding tables with hand-cranked blue-ink memeograph machines, to video cameras, to early MacIntoshes and PCs and barcodes, ..to laptops, Hy-Tek and portable printers. ...and from snail mail to fax machines to the Internet to smartphones.

Cross Country coaches in North Carolina should be aware of rule differences at meets where electronic chip timing systems are now used. While commonly used nowadays at major college cross country meets, this technology is being seen more and more at big high school meets. Timing chips are assigned to runners to wear on their shoes and not only can "final" team results be generated/displayed instantly as soon as the last scoring runner's foot hits the finish, but intermediate team results can be generated after the first mile ...and at the 2-mile, and diplayed on scoreboards and other display gadgets and devices.

Alaska is always the first state to have their state meet - the first weekend in October - and they used chips for the first time, resulting in a bit of a controversy. In the girls 4-A race the girl whose torso crossed the line first did NOT win. (I'm sure many of the old-school folks were totally discombobulated!) The rulebook covers the situation, and the officials made the correct ruling:

Rule 9-3.3 from the 2010 NFHS rule book.

SECTION 3 START/CONCLUSION
ART. 3 . . . Computerized chips may be used to record the
finish of a runner in cross country, provided the chips
are attached to both shoes of the runner. When chips are
used, it is the position of the chip, not the torso, that
determines the finishing position of the runner.
(Some coaches are now joking that they now need to teach their athletes to slide feet first at the finish.)

Many of you who have been coaching for awhile got to meet or know former Appalachian and Clemson coach Bob Pollock. I wasn't aware of his recent passing until today when I was in Winston-Salem visiting family and my brother asked if I'd heard about it. Coach Pollock became ASU's coach in August 1974 as I was beginning my senior year as an ASU runner. We often ran into each other at big track and cross country meets over the years and enjoyed catching up with news and how everybody was doing. Both programs at ASU and Clemson grew in quality and excellence during Bob Pollock's years at each school. He was almost single-handedly responsible for Clemson getting the quality indoor track facility that they now have.

Pole Vault Clinic: Charlotte Latin School, February 28, 2009; Time: 9:30 - 11:30 am
Soar Like an Eagle Vault Club/Charlotte Latin Pole Vault Clinic is designed to teach students the proper skills and techniques necessary to learn to the sport of pole vaulting with an emphasis on each of the following areas: safety, goal-setting, fitness and sportsmanship. The clinic is open to all students ages 12 and older, as well as to all ability levels including those who have never vaulted before. The one day clinic will teach students proper pole vault technique, drills, training, how to prepare a competitive event, equipment selection, and mental aspects. Students will need to bring a vaulting pole, running shoes, track spikes, sun screen and dress appropriately for outdoor activity.

yadda yadda Here's another new book that's been recommended to me. Haven't read it yet, but looks like it may be interesting for cross country runners, coaches and fans:

Title: Juggernauts - The Making of a Runner and a Team in The First American Running Boom
Author: Steve Adkisson
The book tells the story of a group of teenagers who had the good fortune to enter the sport of cross country at the same time as an inspiring young coach was establishing a dynamic program.

These two guys have come out with appears to be a handy little booklet for track coaches, meet officials and meet directors. Officiating High School Track and Field may be especially useful for newer coaches and officials.

More from their website:

"Although written as a guide for high school track and field officials, this book is an invaluable tool for the high school track coach as well. The set-up and organizing of the midweek meets most often falls upon the shoulders of the hosting school's coach. The coach must recruit and train the meet workers. Officiating High School Track and Field serves this purpose well. Each track and field event is addressed and there are many diagrams and event forms that can be duplicated for use in meet administration."

A few reviews:

"This is an excellent manual, not just for the newbie but for long-time T&F officials as well. It does an excellent job of consolidating the information found in the three NFHS publications: rules book, case book, and officials manual. As soon as it become available, every high school track official should have one in his "kit." You guys have done a super job putting this thing together. It's something I have been thinking was needed for years. Hopefully, I can convince our local officials to purchase bulk copies for all our T&F officials."
-- Phil Lawton, Las Vegas NV (Southern Nevada Officials Association - retired T&F Coach)

"Whether it is a youth meet or a meet for elite athletes or whether it is a dual, invitational or championship meet, there are always indviduals involved in the meet who could use this valuable tool. ... The size of the book is perfect for my coaches bag or first aid kit. The format is well-organized, complete and easy to read. The diagrams and forms are very helpful. This is the reference book that our sport sorely needs."
--Scott King, Birmingham H.S. Los Angeles

"...the book is structured in such a manner that an official can quickly look up a needed rule - as well as explanations when needed as to how rules have been applied in practice. A clearly presented Table of Contents directs the official to relevant pages in the book, where rules/explanations are given in outline form, making it easy to locate and interpret what is needed. I wish I had a handbook such as this when I began officiating high school competitions, and will definitely have it on hand, together with the appropriate Rule Book, when doing so in the future."
-- Joseph Hilbe, JD, PhD Former Head Track & Field Coach, University of Hawaii;
Lead Competition Official, 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and former IAAF Technical Official.

This 66-page booklet is $14.95 (free shippping) with discounts for ordering multiple copies, and available at TFofficiating.com

I have been working on a proposal for the nchsaa on having a track and field dual team playoffs. The basis for the project is that all other sports (except swimming and gymnastics) have a playoffs and team championships. Track and field has a state meet, both nothing that is dual meet only (one team vs one other team). The current method of determining a "TEAM" state champion is flawed and i have created a powerpoint which some coaches may be interested in seeing. I want to get as much feedback about this as possible before I contact the nchsaa. Any feedback can be directed to this email address ( davidyounts@wcps.org ).
Thanks,
David Younts, Head Track Coach, Rosewood High School

(Posted August 14, 2007) -- by George Phillips:

Yesterday I learned of the death of Jeryl Todd, at his home in Charlotte on August 10th.

Todd, 54, ran track and played football for West Charlotte High School, and later at Winston-Salem State University. He also played for the Charlotte minor league pro football team in the 70s.

He ran on West Charlotte's 1970 NCHSAA State Champion 4x220 team. I got to know Jeryl in high school when we were both on a team of North Carolina high school all-stars and traveled together to Atlanta for a major post-season meet.

Todd taught and coached at Madison-Mayodan HS, West Charlotte HS, and at Independence High. While at Independence he led the 1985 boys track team to the NCHSAA state championship.

Coach Todd volunteered many long hours working as a meet official at track meets, and working with kids in high school, summer, and Jr. Olympic track programs.

He encountered some difficulties, and downs as well as ups along the way. But those of us who were fortunate to have worked with Coach Todd recall his wonderful way of connecting with kids, and motivating and guiding them. We will cherish those fond memories of him.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Beasley Funeral Home, Statesville Rd., Charlotte.

Jeryl Todd

Update: Published in the Charlotte Observer on 8/17/2007:

Jeryl Darcell Todd
Mr. Todd, of Charlotte, affectionately known as 'Jerry' by his family, and 'Todd' by his friends, was the son of Mary Griffin Todd-White and the late James C. Todd. He was born November 26, 1952 in Waterloo, SC in Lauren County. He was called to be with the Lord on Friday, August 10, 2007 at home with his family after fighting a lengthy battle with cancer. Funeral service is 12:30 PM Saturday at Galilee Baptist Church, 2933 Shady Lane, Charlotte, with visitation at 12:00 PM. Interment in Beatties Ford Memorial Gardens.

Jerry leaves to cherish his memory his wife, the former Faye Allene Herndon; four sons, Jermaine Gill, Victor Scott, Erik Todd, Gerik Todd, all of Charlotte; his mother, Mary Griffin Todd-White of Charlotte; two sisters, Rita Todd of Charlotte and Sarah Ann Smith of Waterloo, SC; two grandchildren, Tajha Gill of Ohio, and Victor Scott, Jr. of Georgia; special friend, Angie Fritz, William Fritz; and a host of loving aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

From Coach Jeff George, RJ Reynolds HS, Winston-Salem:

"I am happy to announce that I have resigned my coaching position at RJ Reynolds. I intend to take at least a few years off from coaching to enjoy the time with my young son. I know there are some good coaches out there who might be interested in the program, so I thought I would post some info about it. Anyone who is interested can contact Jim Spivey (AD) at 336-727-2061 or jspivey@wsfcs.k12.nc.us."

"The girls' program at Reynolds has a tradition of pride and hard work, and we have been successful. The program took a big hit from graduation, but returns several strong, dedicated athletes. There should be a large and talented freshman class next year, as well, so it is a good time for a new coach to step in and build the next phase of the program. There is a hard-working assistant on staff, who will gladly stay on if the new coach desires. The girls' program has a fundraising account through the school with good funds in it, and the school's booster club and PTSA are very active and provide a lot of financial and community support. The school is excellent, with a very diverse base population, and it will become a performing-arts magnet school in the 08-09 school year. The staff and administration are positive and friendly. All in all, it's a great program and a great place to work! I wish that I still had the energy to do a good job, but I know I need to step aside."

"I will continue to teach at Reynolds, which I love doing, for the next year or two. I definitely know how to stay out of the way of the new coach, so I don't think my presence will be a distraction or cause interference. I am also willing to help out at meets or with some administrative tasks. Please feel free to get in touch with me if you would like more details about the program -- my e-mail is CoachGeorgeRJR@hotmail.com."

Cross country coaches/athletes in the NW NC area:

David Honea of Watauga is seeking additional subjects for a cross-training study at ASU. We need both runners who would be willing to cross-train for five weeks after the season, and control subjects who would carry on a normal 5-6 day per week running schedule.

All subjects (including controls) would get two free treadmill tests in ASU's Human Performance Lab, including VO2max, lactate threshold, and running economy. There will also be 3k time trials on the ASU indoor track at the beginning and end of the study. This would require a total of four trips to the ASU campus, twice during the week after the state meet and twice at the end of the study in mid-December.

Running controls would follow a normal off-season training schedule, with tempo runs, strides, and fun races allowed but no "serious" races (such as continuing intense workouts for FootLocker.) Cross-trainers would train exclusively on either an elliptical trainer or stationary bike (no running) for five weeks. Runners who have been competing with slight injuries would be allowed to participate as cross-trainers as long as the injuries have not kept them out of races in the last three weeks of the season. The study may be able to help pay for access to a fitness club for cross-training subjects.

For more information, contact David Honea at dh67956@appstate.edu or (828) 264-4207.
