1973: Carter Suggs breaks the tape in 9.3

Carter Suggs

Carter Suggs (Tarboro HS, Tarboro, NC)
Back in the days before FAT (fully automatic timing)
came along (1977) and distances in yards were
replaced with meters (1980), a phenomenal
sprinter led his school to state team championships
in 1973 and 1974. And at the time, his school
(Tarboro) did not have a track, and the team
worked out in a 80-yard long field behind the
school.

At the state meet as a junior Suggs sped 100 yards
on NC State's 3-year old Tartan track in 9.3 to
destroy the old state record (9.6) and to tie
the national record. He then helped his team to
second in the 4x220 yard relay (1:28.0) and won
the 220 in 21.1 -- breaking the 9-year old state
record of 21.4.

That summer he recorded times of 10.4 (100m) and
20.8 (200m) in international junior competetition.

As a senior he won the 100 in 9.5, the 220 in
another state record 21.0, the long jump (23-1),
and ran a 47.1 leg as Tarboro set a state record
in the 4x440 relay (3:18.5).

In all, Suggs ran a total of six 9.3's in high
school and had a best long jump of 24-0 1/4. He
was second in the voting for High School Athlete
of the Year for 1973 by Track and Field News

Suggs later ran at East Carolina University, and
became a teacher and coach at Tarboro HS.
