Dudley Girls Win Sectional Track MeetBy Sam Davis, Staff Reporter
GREENSBORO -- Greensboro's Dudley High School literally ran away from the field, winning all of the sprints and all but one relay last night to win the girls' sectional track meet at Western Guilford High School.
Dudley, the state's defending champions, got 28 individual points from junior Pam Doggett to outdistance second place High Point Andrews, which scored 67 points and East Forsyth, which finished a distant third with 46.
Doggett captured first place in the 100 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles and also had a second-place finish in the shot put. Teammate Adrienne Ferguson also had two first place finishes, winning both the 100 and 200 meter dashes.
"Everybody put out today and that was the difference," said Dudley coach Lonnie Phifer. "Everyone gave their best efforts. Adrienne and Pam had real big wins for us."
The Panthers, who only lost one member from last year's team, pulled off several surprises, including Ferguson's 100 and 200 meter wins. In the 100, Ferguson set a new meet record, clocking a time of 12.0 seconds. She nipped favored Debra Alexander of East Forsyth, who hadn't lost this season in the 200.
"Adrienne really surprised me in the 100 and 200," said Phifer. "She really came through ... that had to be the biggest upset when she beat Alexander. She really wanted it."
Andrews, last year's sectional champion, pulled a surprise of its own by beating Dudley in the 400-meter relay for the only non-Dudley win in the sprints and relays.
Though his team finished a distant third, East Forsyth coach Dossie Poteat said he was pleased with its performance.
"I think we did very well," said Poteat. "Dudley has a good team and they were ready today."
Also turning in strong performances from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools were Sherry Gordon of North Forsyth, who won both the shot put and discus, and Tomika Whitten, who won the 3200-meter run and finished second in the 1600-meter run.
Whitten made a strong bid in the 1600 meters, coming from behind against Greensboro Grimsley's Jennifer Poole, before losing by only two-tenths of a second.
"I'm pleased with the way Tomika ran," said West coach Penny Craver. "She had the third best time in the 3200 and second best 1600 coming into the race. She didn't run her best in the 3200, but she did well because she had run a hard 1600 earlier."
The Western Regional meet will be held next Friday at Charlotte's Myers Park High School.
