Myers Park Captures Track Title

Friday - May 16, 1980 - The Charlotte Observer

By Sam Fulwood III, Observer Staff Writer

STATESVILLE - Myers Park's track team ran into the Western Regional track meet with confidence and galloped out with 56 points and the 1980 regional title.

"Yes, very definitely we thought we would win it" said Mustang assistant coach Bill Anderson. "Our people performed the way they have all year. They didn't pull any surprises."

Though no most valuable awards were issued, the Mustangs' Ron King clearly was his team's hero.

King gathered two first-place ribbons (for anchoring the 400 and 800-meter relays) and finished second in the 200 meter run.

"I was just trying to do my best," King said. "I ain't bragging but I knew that (the Mustangs would win the regional meet). We just got a lot of running ability, more than the average team."

The Mustangs finished 17 points ahead of second-place finisher Hickory.

Of the nearly 80 schools represented, six Mecklenburg county schools were among the top 10. East Mecklenburg tied North Forsyth for third with 32 points apiece. North Mecklenburg finished fifth-best with 28 points. West Mecklenburg (27) was sixth and Independence tied four schools for 10th with 14 points.

Harding, which finished in 14th-place, scored 12 points. West Charlotte and South Mecklenburg scored 8 and 6 points, respectively.

The top four individuals and relay teams from the Western Regional advance to the state meet at N.C. State in Raleigh next Friday.

"If we don't win (the state meet)," predicted King, "we will be second."

In addition to King, the Mustangs' got multiple-event scoring from Ken Dowdle, who finished first in the 800 meter and 1600 meter runs. Dowdle ran the 800 in 1:55.66 and finished the 1600 in 4:14.80.

Dowdle said winning the state meet has been his goal for more than just this track season.

"It's been my goal since I started running in the 10th-grade," said the Mustang senior. "I think it (the state meet) will be the same as it was today."

North Mecklenburg's Darryl Harris broke his own Statesville Senior High Stadium record in the shot put with a 58-4 1/4 heave.

"The old record was 58-3," said meet director and Statesville track coach Jesse Jackson. "He (Harris) set that last year at the regional meet." No individual records were set in the meet because this was the first year the regional meets have been measured in meters."
